USING MEDIA TO

 BRIDGE DIVIDES

METHODOLOGY

We help peace-makers have greater impact by using film and other media.

In collaboration with peace-building organisations we support local film-makers to make film and other media that connect divided communities.

The film comes second.

What comes first is planning.

We work together to plan how the power of film can best be harnessed to foster understanding and discussion between divided communities. This can be facilitated through well-conceived outreach campaigns linked to the film screenings.

Once our partners have agreed the strategy, the documentary film and videos can be created. Like all films they have to be compelling and well-crafted. But what makes them different is that they are designed 'backwards' with the goal of acting as an 'empathy bridge' between communities built-in from the start.

The outreach campaign will involve film screening with facillitated discussions in the local languages.

There will also be social media campains.

It is hard to generalise as everything has to be agreed with local partners and it also depends on the circumstances.

Making films for peace won't be easy, especially since some of the most effective embracers of video and social media have been those peddling hate and conflict.

For us the key question is: how to use media tools to promote trust and openness in today's information "noise", when calm positive messages seem bland and may be drowned out?
